  4. Country Description: Denmark is a highly developed stable democracy with a
  5. modern economy.  Tourist facilities are extensive, and English is widely
  6. spoken.

  8. Entry Requirements:  A passport is required.  A tourist or business visa is
  9. not required for stays up to three months (the 90-day period begins when
  10. entering the Nordic area:  Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland).  For
  11. further information concerning entry requirements for Denmark, travelers can
  12. contact the Royal Danish Embassy at 3200 Whitehaven Street NW, Washington,
  13. D.C. 20008 at telephone (202) 234-4300, or the nearest Danish Consulate
  14. General in Chicago, Los Angeles, or New York.

  16. Medical Facilities:  Medical facilities are widely available.  U.S. medical
  17. insurance is not always valid outside the United States.  Travelers have
  18. found that in some cases, supplemental medical insurance with specific
  19. overseas coverage has proved to be useful.  Further information on health
  20. matters can be obtained from the Centers for Disease Control's international
  21. travelers hotline on (404) 332-4559.

  23. Crime Information: While Denmark has a low crime rate, travelers to
  24. Copenhagen and other major cities can become targets for pickpockets and
  25. sophisticated purse snatchers.  Purses and luggage are particular targets
  26. for thieves in hotel lobbies and breakfast rooms, airports, and train
  27. stations.  The loss or theft abroad of a U.S. passport should be reported
  28. immediately to local police and to the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
  29. U.S. citizens can refer to the Department of State's pamphlet "A Safe Trip
  30. Abroad" for ways to promote a more trouble-free trip.  The pamphlet is
  31. available from the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing
  32. Office, Washington, D.C. 20402.

  34. Drug Penalties:  U.S. citizens are subject to the laws of the country in
  35. which they are traveling.  Penalties for possession, use, and dealing in
  36. illegal drugs are strict, and convicted offenders can expect jail sentences
  37. and fines.

  39. Other Information: The nationwide police/fire/ambulance emergency telephone
  40. number is 112.  Cyclists have the right-of-way over pedestrians and
  41. automobiles in Denmark and it is important to watch for traffic from bicycle
  42. lanes when crossing streets.

  45. Embassy can obtain updated information on travel and security in Denmark.
